about

A finished work as a puzzle, the other room... David Lynch on the collection of ideas, says he collects idea fragments, slowly he gets more and more pieces of the puzzle and tries to assemble them to make a whole. While doing so he likes to think that there is another room where the puzzle or artwork is complete. I like this and it is a little like the way I think about my collection of samples and the creative process of making a track. Although Mr Lynch when looking for an idea is baiting his mental hook and waiting to catch a piece of his puzzle.

I start my process by recording media, internet radio—a lot of it, in a constant stream. Dropping markers at fragments, sounds, ideas. It's an act randomness but also has a feeling of predetermination. The sounds I collect were always going to be caught.

Once I feel like my net/folder is full. I start on editing, editing the audio from one big file into a palette of sounds, loops and one shots. It is now time to assemble the puzzle/track, a blank canvas?

Francis Bacon maintained that there is no blank canvas: the artist brings everything with them, the things around them, what's in their head. To be free of that and battle against cliché, Bacon made random marks on his canvas as a starting point. Chance as a starting point. Bacon sees chance as manipulated choice—he did make the marks. I drop my markers.

By putting different, sometimes disparate elements together I take different paths or directions in the creative process. A built in Oblique Strategy (Schmidt/Eno). Battling the cliché.

But to a building-code: I bend, stretch, augment and arrange.

Each sound has equal weight, a band member. Augmentation is allowed. Drums and bass are good and head nodding is essential.

I am not sure my track is together in another room but certainly there is a set of step-by-step IKEA instructions lying on the floor. There is only one way to put it together kcudgodtac olleh.
